WOMEN’S COUNTY CRIKET

Following relegation by a large margin in 2006, and the retirement of several players, 2007 was largely a rebuilding year for The Tytherington Club sponsored Cheshire Women. The campaign began spectacularly, was badly affected by rain and ended with a relegation scare and the feeling of what might have been.

At the start of the season, women’s cricket in the county scored a massive coup with the signing of Australian one day international Megan White. The off spinning all rounder not only played with distinction for Cheshire, Tytherington and Pott Shrigley (men’s) 1st XI, but helped massively to boost the profile of the women’s game in the county.

Before the Championship matches, a Cheshire Invitation XI friendly against Durham marked the farewell appearance of England all rounder Laura Newton. In her home town of Nantwich, she bowed out with an unbeaten half century in a massive Invitation XI score of 318 in 45 overs.

COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP 2007 -Cheshire Women avoid the drop

Cheshire v Middlesex at Hawarden Park  - Cheshire won by 7 wkts

Middlesex 171-8 (50 overs) : Cheshire 172-3 (38.4 overs)

The stunning Castle Ground at Hawarden Park hosted the opening Championship game. 3-24 from Lorna Thomas was the pick of Cheshire’s fine spin attack as Middlesex only reached 171-8. In reply, Jenny Halstead made 34, followed by a stand of 83 in 15 overs between Dawn Prestidge (57 not out) and White (40) to secure victory.

Cheshire v Middlesex at Queen’s College, Taunton – Middlesex won by 3 wkts

Cheshire 102 (49.3 overs): Middlesex 103-7 (40 overs)

The next action permitted by the weather was again against Middlesex in the first game of the week of matches at Taunton, the ECB’s home of women’s cricket. Cheshire managed only 102, and Middlesex got home by three wickets (Megan White 3-14) after being made to fight for every run.

Cheshire v Warwickshire at Queen’s College, Taunton – Warks won by 5 runs

Warwickshire 116 (49.3 overs): Cheshire 111 (39.4 overs; Jennie Sclater 25)

Warwickshire were kept in check by some fine fielding to back up the efforts of Dawn Prestidge (3-13), Jenny Halstead (3-14) and 13 year old left arm spinner Hannah Gradwell who bowled a fairytale spell of 3-10. Cheshire were favourites at 100-5, but collapsed to a five run defeat.

Cheshire were spared an awkward last day relegation decider against Staffsafter heavy rain on the morning of the final match, so Staffordshire were relegated, leaving Cheshire’s youthful squad – average age 21 – to return older and wiser in 2008 to tackle Div 3 again.

Cheshire’s Halstead captains England to Euro glory

England, represented by an Under 21 side, won the European Championships, held in Holland. The victorious Captain and Player of the Tournament was Cheshire’s Jenny Halstead, who also played for the full England side in a friendly in 2007.

SENIOR REPRESENTATIVE CRICKET 2006

Liverpool Victoria Championship 2nd Division

After the euphoria of being promoted to Division 2 for the 2006 season the team soon realised the mammoth task ahead of them. Pre season injuries to key players Clarke and Collyer and with Bench (overseas) not being available meant the squad was stretched to its limits. The gap between Div 3 & Div 2 is quite substantial; therefore it was always going to be a difficult year. Unfortunately Cheshire lost all of their matches comprehensively.  The squad will need a new approach in 2007 in Division 3, and much will be required of the England Academy players, Halstead, Prestidge and Griffiths.
